One of our members won Best of Show at the First ever Iowa 4-H Film Fest. With that he also received $500 gift card to the Apple Store. I will post his video when ISU Extension releases a press release!
Our leader, Jane Runneals, will be on Iowa Public Radio Monday Morning, August 9th at 10am! She will be a guest on IPR’s Talk of Iowa. She will be joined by Chuck Morris, ISU Extension – Director of 4-H Youth Development.

Minutes of the 4H Central Area Tech Team (CATT)

Roll call was taken. Nine members were present at the meeting and answered the question: What is your favorite Olympic sport?
Treasurer’s report was given. Current balance in the treasury is $333.70. Kyle approved the report and Craige seconded.
Secretary’s report was tabled until next meeting.
A robotics &/or GIS workshop will be held starting in March prior to each monthly meeting if there is enough interest. Please let Jane know if you plan on attending at janerun@iastate.edu.
The State 4H Volunteer Leader Retreat is open to any intermediate and senior 4Hers. It will be held in Ankeny on the 27th of February. Total cost is $10 (which includes a meal).
The 4H Communication Contest is coming up and it is important for 4Hers to participate. It is an easy way to improve your public speaking skills and/or your poster designing skills as well as practice for the County and State fairs. Deadline to sign up for this year’s contest, to be held April 9/10, is Friday, March 12th.
After much discussion, Ethan (accidentally) volunteered for redesigning the CATT brochure.
Club fund raising ideas should be sent to David.
The CATT voted in favor of redesigning the club shirt. Anyone interested should bring designs to the next meeting. Limit the colors of the designs to no more than three.
David gave the website update.
The CATT is holding a contest for who can post the most blog articles on the CATT webpage, which is located at www.centralareatechteam.org. At the next meeting the counts will be tallied up and the winner will get a prize.
Iowa 4H has just redone their webpage and it is up at www.extension.iastate.edu/4H. Members are invited to take a look.
At the next meeting all members are required to make a presentation either as Communication Contest practice or just for the CATT.

The meeting activity for this month was looking at the insides of computers and fixing what was wrong with them. Guest presenter Mr. Ray Wirth of Nevada Computer Center generously shared his own expertise in that field. Thanks Ray!

Hi, It has been a long time since I last updated the blog! I’m going to try to update it more now!! We all feel bad about the bad events that happened in Haiti just a few days ago!

The Geospatial community is trying to make a difference. We are trying to update online maps, such as the openstreetmap. Google has been really generous and contributed 15 CM Resolution Satelite imagery. I am currently in the process of downloading this imagery, but with it being 15CM res, it totals to be about 30+GB of data!! I have currently completed about 5GB, if even that. I’m still trying to make contact with National 4-H for contact information for Haiti 4-H. If you have any ideas as to what we can map, feel free to email us Haiti (at) centralareatechteam (dot) org . I will be posting my maps (Imagery from Google) here as well.

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – The Huntington County 4-H FIRST Robotics team created a robot to help police officers develop better reaction times in the field.
The teens built the robot, nicknamed Fred, throughout the summer for Huntington City Police to use for target practice.
The process also allowed the robotics team to learn valuable leadership and engineering skills.
“Our lead engineer, Kaleb Fowler, he got to experience a lot of things we don’t normally get to do with regular robots,” said Student Project Engineer Gracie Fowler. “He got to learn how to weld and braze and we all got to learn how to spray paint this year. And a lot of our younger kids that are on the team got to come in and learn skills that they wouldn’t get to learn normally.”
Fowler says this was an excellent way to give back to a community who has given to them.
“Our community has given us so much in the forms of sponsorships, mentors, and supplies that when the police department asked us to give back we couldn’t say no,” said Fowler. “This was a good chance for us to give the police department something they can use and develop skills for us.”
The county and city police will begin target practice on Fred in the coming weeks.
Indiana’s NewsCenter is told depending on the officers’ aim; Fred should be a member of the force for quite some time.
